Whittingham Hospital was a psychiatric hospital in Lancashire, England. It opened in 1873 as the Fourth Lancashire County Asylum and grew to be the largest mental hospital in Britain. It had its own farm, railways, church, post office, brewery, reservoirs, gas works, ballroom, brass band, orchestra and butchers. An ‘open door’ principle was practiced on many wards, with patients free to roam the grounds. During the 1950s the hospital produced an early electroencephalograph machine and conducted pioneering experiments on patients. Whittingham faced many controversies during the 1960s with allegations of abuse, neglect, theft and manslaughter. A documentary by Ray Gosling and Nick Broomfield was broadcast in 1975 following the day to day lives of the patients. It can be found in three parts on YouTube, although in poor quality. The hospital closed in 1995 and is currently being demolished.
